ABOUT THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM

Heartland rock band The Gaslight Anthem was formed in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2006 by frontman Brain Fallon. The band consists of Fallon (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Alex Rosamilia (lead guitar, backing vocals), Alex Levine (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Benny Horowitz (drums, percussion). Fallon had been in a number of bands before forming The Gaslight Anthem, the most recent being This Charming Man. After experimenting with various line-ups, the band settled on its current iteration, bar Rosamilia, who joined when guitarist Mike Volpe left due to a change in musical direction. The band performed its first show at The Only Game in Town in Somerville, New Jersey, in early 2006.

CAREER

2007-2008: Sink or Swim

Sink or Swim, the band’s debut album, was released on May 29, 2007, through XOXO Records. IT received positive reviews both from independent publications such as punknews.org, AbsolutePunk.net, and from mainstream sites like Spin.com. "I'da Called You Woody, Joe", a track from the album, was featured as part of the soundtrack of the video games Skate 2 and Skate It in 2009.

The band released the four-track EP Señor and the Queen on February 4, 2008, via Sabot Productions.

2008-2010: The ‘59 Sound and breakthrough

The ‘59 Sound, the band’s second studio album, was released on August 19, 2008, through SideOneDummy Records. Produced by Ted Hutt, the album features Hot Water Music's Chris Wollard and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' Dicky Barrett as guests. In December 2008, eMusic named The '59 Sound the best album of 2008, and NME rated it as the 47th best album of the year. In addition, the title track was ranked number 62 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008. That month, Kerrang! called The Gaslight Anthem "The best new band you'll hear in 2008." Later that year, the band covered the song "God's Gonna Cut You Down" for the Johnny Cash tribute album All Aboard! A Tribute to Johnny Cash.

In 2009, the band supported Social Distortion on their European tour and they were announced as a supporting act for Bruce Springsteen at Hyde Park Calling. They performed at Pinkpop in June 2009 and at their set at Glastonbury Festival later that month, Springsteen joined the band on stage during their performance of "The '59 Sound." Fallon then returned the favor, performing the song "No Surrender" for Springsteen’s headline set. Following Bruce Springsteen's guest appearances with the band at Glastonbury and Hyde Park, sales of The ‘59 Sound doubled. At London's Hard Rock Calling festival on June 28, Springsteen again joined the band to perform "The '59 Sound", and Fallon again joined Springsteen in singing "No Surrender." That August, the band performed at Lollapalooza.

2010-2013: American Slang and Handwritten

American Slang, the band’s third studio album, was released on June 15, 2010, debuting at number 16 on the Billboard 200. That summer, the band played five dates in the UK, as well as performing at festivals including Bonnaroo Festival, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Southside Festival, Hurricane Festival, Hard Rock Calling, Rock Werchter, The Guernsey Festival of Performing Arts, A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise, Reading and Leeds Festivals and Øyafestivalen.

In October 2011, the band announced that they had signed with Mercury Records. The following July, they released their fourth studio album, Handwritten. The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and topped the US Top Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts. It also reached number one in Scotland, number two on the UK and German Albums charts, and the top 10 in four other countries. It charted in an additional nine countries.

In September 2012, the band played at DeLuna Fest, where they performed a cover of Pearl Jam's "State of Love and Trust" with Eddie Vedder on vocals.

During their 2012 US tour in November, at the last of three nights in a row at New York City's Terminal 5 venue, Fallon announced that they had recorded the previous night’s show and would be featuring it on a live DVD release.

In June 2013, the band released a limited edition box set titled Singles Collection: 2008-2011. That December, they followed with their first DVD, titled Live in London, which features recordings from two shows performed at The Troxy in London.

2014-2015: Get Hurt

In January 2014, The Gaslight Anthem released The B-Sides, a collection of acoustic songs, live songs, and out-takes from their various singles. That August, the band released its fifth studio album, Get Hurt. It reached number four on the Billboard 200, number two on the Top Rock Albums chart, and number one on the Top Alternative Albums chart. It reached the top 10 in five other countries, including the UK.

In July 2015, the band announced an indefinite hiatus following their European summer tour in support of Get Hurt, which concluded at England’s Reading Festival on August 30.

2018-2021: The ‘59 Sound Anniversary Tour

In January 2018, The Gaslight Anthem announced that it would be reuniting for the Governors Ball Music Festival held on Randall's Island in New York City, as well as for a string of shows celebrating the 10th Anniversary of The '59 Sound. That June, the band released The 59 Sound Sessions, a 10th-anniversary album of nine early versions and B-sides from The '59 Sound. After this release, they embarked upon their 10th-anniversary tour of North America and Europe.

2022-present: Reunion and sixth studio album

On March 25, 2022, the band announced on Instagram that it was reuniting and working on its sixth studio album.
