The Southern Rock Opera was a concept album based on the real-life events of the legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. The events like their plane crash serve as inspiration for the politically charged studio effort. Drive-By Truckers an independent band that created a groundbreaking stadium rock gem that became their career-defining work. Creating the album had its many challenges, from dealing with line-up changes to touring in conjunction with recording - it took a total of four years to complete Southern Rock Opera. Moreover, the funds to create this album were short - so Drive-By Truckers, at the time, created an ingenious system akin to the modern crowdfunding concept. Upon its release, the album received wide critical acclaim, and music publications called Southern Rock Opera, one of the best albums of the decade.
